I have ordered my (signed) copy as well. My interest in all this is the same as yours : portraits of soldiers of the English Civil War, an interest I have had for many years. I have actually been to the 1983 exhibition (as well as the one on Van Dyck) because of my interest in the English Civil War and especially in the Royalist commanders.

I can help you with a colour version of Dobson’s unfinished portrait of Prince Rupert, I have a scan from one of my books. There is a portrait of Sir George Lisle as well, unfinished of the school of Van Dyck it says. I have not been able to find this painting anywhere and would very much like to hear your opinion of the portrait. Unfortunately it is a black and white reproduction. It portrays a blond man with a rather sweet smile wearing black armour.

Do let me know if you are interested and I shall send the scans to you attached to an e-mail (I am not a blogger).

    • Hi Susanne, thanks for posting, and thanks buying the book – I really hope you enjoy it! I’m quite jealous you went to the exhibition and would love to hear your thoughts on it. I’d very much like to see a colour version of the Prince Rupert portrait as well. That would be very kind, thank you! Likewise the Lisle. I know there’s a painting of (blond) Richard Cromwell somewhere that’s often labelled as George Lisle, but I can’t remember the detail of it. I wonder if this might be him too? Very happy to take a look at it – my email is Thanks again!
